The JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass is an ideal option if you’re planning to exclusively explore the Kanto, Tohoku, and South Hokkaido regions for up to 6 consecutive days.

It’s an economical option, even if you are simply planning a return trip to Sapporo from Tokyo. In comparison to the pass' cost of 40,000 yen, a one way ticket between Tokyo and Sapporo costs around 28,000 yen.

It’s also a good option for travelers arriving at Shin Chitose Airport in Hokkaido and wishing to travel beyond Sapporo to discover cities such as Hakodate and Aomori.

Beyond the main cities in the Tohoku region, the pass is also a good way to economically explore destinations off the beaten track such as Shirakami in Akita, Zao Fox Village in Miyagi, and Zaō in Yamagata.

Eligibility and validity requirements

The pass is valid for 6 consecutive days, counting from midnight to midnight. The day of activation is considered a full day.

Only one pass per usage term can be purchased or exchanged by an individual.

Pricing varies:

  • Child Pass: For travelers aged 6-11
  • Adult Pass: For those aged 12 and above

Rules for infants:

  • Up to 2 infants (1-5 years) can accompany an adult or child pass holder at no extra cost
  • A third infant or those needing a reserved seat require a Child Rail Pass
  • Babies under 1 year travel free

Usage guidelines:

  • The pass isn't compatible with automatic ticket barriers. Show it to a conductor at entry/exit gates.
  • If returning the pass in Japan, it's subject to a 10% processing fee.
  • Lost, stolen, or damaged passes aren't replaceable.
  • Always carry the pass alongside your foreign-issued passport, ready to show to JR officials.
