Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
JRailPass.com FAQ

How long is the Japan Rail Pass valid for?

A Japan Rail Pass can be valid for either 7, 14 or 21 consecutive days.

Once you receive the Japan Rail Pass Exchange voucher, you will be able to exchange it within the following 3 months. The voucher can only be exchanged in an Exchange Office in Japan. During the exchange, you will be asked to specify the activation date of your pass. This will be the date on which you wish to start using the JR Pass. You can set the activation date to be up to 30 days after the exchange date.

What time does the pass expire on the last day of validity?

The Japan Rail Pass validity period is calculated in days, not in hours.

Therefore, if you have purchased a 14-day pass and your activation date (when you first use the pass) is April 1, the exact expiration time will be at midnight on April 14.

If you plan to take a late train on the last valid day of your pass, you will be able to do so as long as your train leaves before midnight.

Do the 7/14/21 days need to be consecutive?

The validity period of the Japan Rail Pass is either 7, 14 or 21 consecutive days

The exact expiration time is either the 7th, 14th or the 21st night at midnight. Therefore, passengers won’t have the option of splitting the validity period of their passes.

Please note that once activated, the date on the passes cannot be changed.

Can I add extra days to my JR Pass?

Once you purchase your JR Exchange order, you cannot add extra days

Once you exchange the voucher for the actual JR Pass and activate it, you cannot modify its validity period in any way. If you wish to extend your JR Pass, you will need to purchase a new one. For example, you have previously purchased the 14-day pass and want to extend your JR Pass another 7-days, then you would need to order a 7-day pass online to be delivered to Japan.

JR Pass cannot be extended by 1,2, or more days. It is available for 7,14, and 21-days, non-extendable and non-transferable.
