It was thought that the viewer could express gratitude for this year\u2019s harvest and hope for the year to come.<\/p>\n<p>The Tsukimi tradition dates back to the Heian period, from 794 to 1185 A.D. <strong>Moon-viewing parties<\/strong> are thought to have originated with the introduction of the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival to the aristocratic elite.<\/p>\n<p>At these gatherings, participants would gather to listen to music and recite or compose poetry by moonlight. Some would board boats in order to <strong>view the moon\u2019s reflection<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>By the 1600s, the custom had spread to the wider population and was associated with existing traditions of <strong>offering part of the rice harvest to the gods<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Traditionally, Tsukimi centers on the <strong>fifteenth night of the eighth month<\/strong> of the old lunar calendar. Japan also has a separate moon-viewing tradition on the thirteenth night of the ninth month, known as Jusanya. The latter custom declined during the Meiji period but is still observed by some people today.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"The_Harvest_Moon_festival\">The Harvest Moon festival<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Tsukimi is a relatively quiet celebration centered on traditional foods, seasonal decorations, and <strong>enjoying the beauty of the moon<\/strong>. Some observers also visit shrines, burn incense, or make food offerings to Shinto gods.<\/p>\n<p>Today, some people <strong>continue the celebrations for several days<\/strong> around the traditional moon-viewing night rather than limiting them to a single evening.<\/p>\n<p>Celebrations still take place even when the moon is <strong>hidden by clouds or rain<\/strong>. A cloudy moon-viewing night may be called Mugetsu, meaning \u201cno moon\u201d, while a rainy one is known as Ugetsu, or \u201crain moon\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Tsukimi_dates\">Tsukimi dates<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Tsukimi follows the <strong>traditional Japanese lunar calendar<\/strong>, so its date changes each year on the modern calendar and typically falls in September or October.<\/p>\n<p>The main Tsukimi celebration, known as <strong>Jugoya<\/strong>, takes place on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month. A second moon-viewing tradition (<strong>Jusanya<\/strong>) takes place on the thirteenth day of the ninth lunar month.<\/p>\n<p>In<strong> 2026, Jugoya falls on September 25<\/strong>, while Jusanya falls on October 23. Popular examples include Tsukimi soba and Tsukimi udon, noodles served with egg, nori and broth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Seasonal produce<\/strong> is also presented as an offering to the moon. Sweet potatoes, taro, edamame, chestnuts, and sake often feature in the celebrations. Traditionally, prayers for an abundant harvest accompany this custom.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Tsukimi_decorations\">Tsukimi decorations<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Susuki, or pampas grass<\/strong>, is a traditional Tsukimi decoration. Its plumes resemble rice plants, and displays of five or 10 are said to represent a bountiful harvest.<\/p>\n<p>The area where the moon viewing will take place is typically decorated with pampas grass, as it\u2019s thought that this offers <strong>protection\u00a0from evil<\/strong>. Roofs may be decorated as an offering to the moon god and Autumn flowers in the <em>ikebana<\/em> style may also be used.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Food offerings<\/strong> also serve as decorations. For example, taro bulbs with multiple shoots represent a prosperous family. Dango may be stacked in displays of 15 to represent the fifteenth day of the month, or 12 to represent the months of the year. Tea ceremony displays may also be present.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"What_is_the_Rabbit_on_the_Moon\">What is the Rabbit on the Moon?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Instead of the \u201cman in the moon\u201d well-known in the West, in Japan the moon\u2019s craters are said to be an image of <strong>a rabbit pounding mochi<\/strong>. Mochi is a traditional Japanese rice cake. It can be made by pounding cooked glutinous rice with a large wooden mallet until it becomes smooth and sticky \u2013 a process known as <em>mochitsuki<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The image of the moon rabbit <strong>may relate to a Buddhist fable<\/strong> in which a rabbit offers itself as food to a hungry traveler, who is revealed to be a deity. The rabbit\u2019s image is then placed on the moon.<\/p>\n<p>Another theory is that it comes from <strong>a play on words<\/strong>.
