The first recorded festival took place in 951 when a spear was sent down the Dojima River as part of the<strong> Hokonagashi ceremony<\/strong> which still takes place today.<\/p>\n<p>The festival evolved over the years and grew in popularity during <strong>the Edo Period <\/strong>when the city was Japan\u2019s capital and its population grew dramatically. <strong>Tenmangu\u00a0shrine<\/strong> was built near what is now the site of the Osaka Dome.<\/p>\n<p>The festival continues to grow and change as more find <strong>new ways to celebrate<\/strong> the tradition. Today, the festival draws tens of thousands of people for the fireworks on the <strong>final night of the festival<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Tenjin_Matsuri_dates\">Tenjin Matsuri dates<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The<strong> Tenjin Matsuri Festival<\/strong> takes place every year, over two summer days:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>July 24<\/strong>:Prayer&#8217;s at Osaka&#8217;s Tenmagu Shrine<\/li>\n<li><strong>July 25<\/strong>: Land and river processions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span id=\"How_to_get_there\">How to get there<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Different parts of the festival take place in different areas of Osaka by most of the festivities are centered around the<strong> Osaka Tenmangu Shrine<\/strong> and the Okawa River. You can easily reach the festival area by train.<\/p>\n<p>The nearest stations to the river are <strong>JR Osaka-Tenmangu Station<\/strong> (on the JR Tozai Line) and <strong>Minami-Morimachi Station (<\/strong>on the Tanimachi and Sakaisuji subway lines).<\/p>\n<p>If you have a JR Pass, you should take the Tozai Line to JR Osaka-Tenmangu Station. Connections from the Tozai Line and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/osaka-city-loop-line\">Osaka Loop Line<\/a> are available via Kyobashi and Kita-shinchi stations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n            <a class=\"fasc-button banner-button-shortcode fasc-size-large fasc-type-flat fasc-rounded-medium ico-fa fasc-ico-after fa-chevron-circle-right fasc-style-bold\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/the-japan-rail-pass\">\n                Buy your JR Pass\n            <\/a>\n        <\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Prayers_at_Osaka8217s_Tenmangu_Shrine\">Prayers at Osaka&#8217;s Tenmangu Shrine<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The festival kicks off on July 24 with a ritual at the <strong>Tenmangu Shrine <\/strong>where the deity of scholarship is drawn out. The golden Omikoshis on display in Tenmangu shrine is one of the highlights of the festival.<\/p>\n<p>This is followed by a ceremony at the river when people <strong>pray for peace and prosperity<\/strong> for the city of Osaka. In the afternoon, men in big red hats beat drums to signify that all the preparations for the festival are complete.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Land_and_River_Processions\">Land and River Processions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The second day of the festival, on July 25, is when the fun really starts. The drummers lead the land procession from Tenmangu Shrine through the <strong>streets of Osaka<\/strong>. At 18:00 the procession reaches the Okawa River for the river procession.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Rikutogyo_the_land_procession\">Rikutogyo: the land procession<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The land procession features <strong>bunraku theatre<\/strong>, puppets, ceremonial floats, costumed characters, lanterns, lion dancers, and traditional kagura music. There are also stage boats where entertainers perform traditional <strong>noh and bunraku<\/strong> dances.<\/p>\n<p>Agile <strong>Dondoko boats<\/strong> weave in and out of the river procession carrying mouth-watering food. The floating food stalls sell typical street food and drink and help to create a unique festival atmosphere. The spectacular display lasts 90 minutes and is recognized as one of Japan\u2019s <strong>best displays of the year<\/strong>. The reflections on the water help to create a truly unforgettable spectacle.<\/p>\n<p>Unsurprisingly, the banks of the Okawa River become <strong>very crowded <\/strong>for the fireworks display. People start arriving very early to start grabbing the best spots so it\u2019s a smart idea to get there<strong> as early as possible<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Paid seats are available from a location <strong>near Temmabashi Station <\/strong>and they offer a\u00a0 decent view of the fireworks.
