The festival itself also <strong>dates back over one thousand years<\/strong>. The original purpose of the Gion Matsuri was to <strong>pray for deliverance from a plague of sickness in 869<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Prayers were ordered by the emperor. Worshipers believed that the epidemic could be halted if the gods were appeased by a purification ritual. Decorated weapons and portable shrines were erected wherever a disease outbreak occurred. Keep in mind <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\">JR Pass<\/a> does not cover the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/maps\">Kyoto subway<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Alternatively, you can <strong>walk from Kyoto Station to the Shijo-Karasuma intersection<\/strong> going north along Karasuma-dori street. The walk is about 30 minutes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>From Osaka<\/strong>, you can take the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/tokaido-shinkansen-jr-pass\">Tokaido Shinkansen line<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/shin-osaka-station\">Shin-Osaka station<\/a> to Kyoto Station, and then follow the said above. Celebrants don colorful and traditional yukata robes. Throughout the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/summer-festivals-japan\">festival season<\/a>, they view floats and eat street foods.<\/p>\n<p>The mid-month <strong>Saki Matsuri Junko procession<\/strong> is one of the main events. Twenty-three of the yamaboko are staged at the <strong>Shijo-Karasama intersection<\/strong>. They travel east along the Shijo-dori, north along the Kawaramachi-dori, and west along the Oike-dori.<\/p>\n<p>On the same day, <strong>the deity of the Yasaka Shrine is carried through town<\/strong> in a mikoshi, or portable shrine. Men carry the mikoshi on their shoulders. It returns to the shrine after the second procession.<\/p>\n<p>Near the month\u2019s end is the <strong>Ato Matsuri Junko<\/strong>, or \u201cafter the festival procession.\u201d Ten of the yamaboko are again pulled through the city in reverse of the main parade route. Interestingly, this procession was reinstituted in 2014 after an absence of nearly 50 years.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Gion_Matsuri_dates_and_schedule\">Gion Matsuri dates and schedule<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Festivities of the Gion Matsuri take place <strong>during the entire month of July<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The grand procession of the <strong>Yamaboko Junko or Saki Matsuri Junko<\/strong> takes place on <strong>July 17 from 9 to 11:30 am<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Aton Matsuri Junko<\/strong> occurs on <strong>July 24, beginning at 9 am<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Yoiyama take place July 14 through 16 and 21 through 23, from dusk to 10 pm<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Dates remain the same from year to year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re planning to stay in Kyoto for the event, be sure to <strong>make your reservations months in advance<\/strong>. Accommodations are often completely booked and sell out quickly.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Yamaboko_Festival_Floats\">Yamaboko: Festival Floats<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>An <strong>essential element of the Gion Matsuri<\/strong> is the <em><strong>yamaboko<\/strong><\/em>, a collection of <strong>more than thirty parade floats<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>There are two types of floats. Nine to ten are enormous <strong>hoko floats<\/strong> that can weigh 12 tons and measure 25 meters in height. The wheels of these floats are as tall as a man, built of wood without the use of nails, and decorated with fabric elements. Teams of several dozen men pull each float. The floats are <strong>pulled through the town on procession days<\/strong>. When not in motion, the floats can be viewed on nearby streets, such as the Shijo-dori or the Shijo-Karasuma intersection.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n            <a class=\"fasc-button banner-button-shortcode fasc-size-large fasc-type-flat fasc-rounded-medium ico-fa fasc-ico-after fa-chevron-circle-right fasc-style-bold\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/the-japan-rail-pass\">\n                Buy your JR Pass\n            <\/a>\n        <\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Yoiyama_Street_Parties\">Yoiyama: Street Parties<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Street parties called yoi-yoi-yoi-yama, yoi-yoi-yama, and yoi-yama are held on <strong>three evenings proceeding each procession day<\/strong>. Streets are closed and the floats are assembled. Families may put historic items &#8211; heirlooms such as kimonos, painted screens, and armor &#8211; on display to the public in a tradition called Byobu Matsuri.
