The name of this trail, also called <em>Nakasendo Way<\/em>, literally translates to \u201cmiddle mountain way\u201d or \u201cpath through the mountains.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The portion of the Nakasendo Trail <strong>between Magome and Tsumago is well maintained and easy enough for even inexperienced hikers<\/strong> and\u00a0for those who want to do it<strong> on their own<\/strong>. At a leisurely pace, the five mile (8 kilometer) trail can be completed in two to three hours. No special equipment is necessary, but be sure to wear comfortable flat-soled shoes. Traveling from Magome to Tsumago, rather than taking the opposite route, involves less uphill hiking.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"The_Kiso_Valley\">The Kiso Valley<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The Kiso Valley was once an <strong>ancient trade route alongside the Central <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/takayama-japanese-alps\">Japanese Alps<\/a><\/strong>. The 70 kilometer route became part of the <strong>500 kilometer Nakasendo<\/strong> during the Edo Period. Japan Rail Pass holders should use the Hikari trains. This portion of the journey will take just under two hours.<\/p>\n<p>You can also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/faq\/nozomi-mizuho-shinkansen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ride the Nozomi trains with your JR Pass<\/a> from October 2023. However, it will be necessary to pay a supplement to use this service.<\/p>\n<p>At Nagoya, transfer to the <strong>JR Shinano Limited Express to Nakatsugawa Station<\/strong>, along the Chuo line. This portion of the trip takes just under an hour, for a <strong>total travel time of about three hours<\/strong>. If you use the Hikari trains along the Tokaido Shinkansen, the entire trip will be <strong>covered by your JR Pass<\/strong>. Check to make sure that your train\u2019s itinerary includes a <strong>stop at Nagiso Station<\/strong>, as many do not; otherwise, you can transfer to a local train at Nakatsugawa Station. It is a \u201cpost town,\u201d number 43 of 69 stations that served travelers during the Edo Period. The town is well-preserved, with well-tended gardens. You\u2019ll spend the <strong>first day of your itinerary exploring the area\u2019s rich history<\/strong>. You can choose from the Honjin\/Toson Memorial Museum, a former inn that celebrates a local artist; or, visit the <strong>Wakihonjin Museum<\/strong> to learn of the history of the town itself.<\/p>\n<p>Next, enjoy lunch at the <strong>Tsuchimaya Shiryokan<\/strong>, pick up some souvenirs, and explore the small museum at this location. Then, spend the remainder of the afternoon at the <strong>Shimizuya Shiryokan<\/strong>, another small museum featuring local clothing, pottery, and scrolls.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Day_2_8211_Hiking_from_Magome_to_Tsumago\">Day 2 &#8211; Hiking from Magome to Tsumago<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>On this day, you will <strong>walk the Magome-Tsumago Trail<\/strong>. You\u2019ll find a Wi-fi hotspot at the top of the hill before leaving Magome. Allow <strong>two to four hours to complete the hike<\/strong> to Tsumago.<\/p>\n<p>The trails are <strong>clearly marked in both Japanese and English<\/strong>, so a map is not necessary. Along the route, you\u2019ll also find public toilets and a tea house in order to refresh yourself.<\/p>\n<p>In the afternoon, you will arrive in Tsumago. Luggage can be dropped off at the town\u2019s information center in the morning and picked up at the information center of the other town in the afternoon.
