The station is the first to be built by Japan Rail in Tokyo since the Saitama-Shintoshin Station, which opened in 2000.<\/p>\n<p>Both the Yamanote Line and the <strong>Keihin Tohoku Line<\/strong> are covered by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/the-japan-rail-pass\">JR Pass<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Takanawa Gateway is also <strong>located within walking distance of the nearby Sengakuji Station<\/strong>, which allows access to both the Toei Asakusa Line and the Keikyu Line.<\/p>\n<p>It is also easy to <strong>access the Tokaido lines<\/strong>, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/tokaido-shinkansen-jr-pass\">Tokaido Shinkansen<\/a>, from Takanawa Gateway, and Haneda Airport is also just a few stops away.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Station_Layout\">Station Layout<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Takanawa Gateway Station is a 3-story facility whose <strong>design was inspired by traditional Japanese tastes<\/strong>. The platforms are served by an elevator with capacity for 24 passengers, while an 18-person elevator ferries commuters to the concourse on the second floor.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Unique_Features_of_Takanawa_Gateway\">Unique Features of Takanawa Gateway<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Takanawa Gateway is fully equipped with up-to-date futuristic technology, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Digital signage machines<\/strong> which can respond to voice requests for information about train routes and nearby tourist attractions. The data generated can also be sent to the traveler&#8217;s smartphone by scanning a QR code.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Six mobile robots<\/strong> which handle security and cleaning tasks. The security robots are able to detect passengers using white canes and recommend assistance from human station staff. They can also use facial recognition features to identify lost children and even suspects wanted by the police.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wheelchair robots<\/strong> which can assist disabled passengers to access washroom facilities and elevators.<\/li>\n<li>An <strong>automated convenience store<\/strong> containing over 600 items including bento lunch boxes. The store boasts remote scanning technology which identifies the items customers select using surveillance cameras, as well as a self check-out with an automated payment system compatible with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/using-japanese-ic-cards\">Japanese IC Cards<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span id=\"History\">History<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>On June 3 2014, JR East announced that a new station would be <strong>built above the existing Tamachi Depot<\/strong>, with the aim of having the construction completed in time for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/tokyo-2020-olympics\">2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\"  decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-12355 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/takanawa-gateway-station-tokyo.jpg\" alt=\"takanawa gateway station platforms\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/takanawa-gateway-station-tokyo.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/takanawa-gateway-station-tokyo-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/takanawa-gateway-station-tokyo-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Kengo Kuma, the architect<\/strong> behind the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/tokyo-olympic-stadium\">National Stadium<\/a> that will be the main <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/tokyo-2020-olympics\/venues\">venue for the Olympics<\/a>, was hired to design the new station.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The choice of name, Takanawa Gateway, was the result of a naming competition<\/strong> in which JR East ran for the new station. Over 13,00 names were suggested by the Japanese public before \u201cTakanawa Gateway\u201d was chosen. The official name of the station was announced on December 4th, 2018.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Opening_Ceremony\">Opening Ceremony<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>JR East opened Takanawa Gateway station for service on March 14th, 2020. <strong>The planned opening ceremony was unfortunately postponed<\/strong> due to concerns surrounding the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, as was a public inauguration scheduled for March 19th.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, <strong>more than 300 railway fans showed up at the station<\/strong> before 4am on March 14th to greet the arrival of the first train on the Yamanote inner loop line 30 minutes later, enthusiastically cheering and snapping photographs from the platform.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Surrounding_Area\">Surrounding Area<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The <strong>area around Takanawa Gateway Station<\/strong> was previously used as a railcar base and currently lacks many of the amenities found in other areas of Tokyo.<\/p>\n<p>However, the opening of the new station is the first step of a <strong>wider plan to create a new town in Tokyo<\/strong> over 13 hectares of land, in order to attract global business,<\/p>\n<p>Known as Global Gateway Shinagawa, this \u201cland readjustment project\u201d aims to <strong>enhance transportation and spearhead new construction<\/strong> in the neighborhood, including a number of office buildings, residential housing, and hotels.
