Use this travel guide to familiarize yourself with both the Yamagata Line and the use of the JR Pass.<\/p>\n<p>The Yamagata Shinkansen Line came into operation in 1999 and is considered to be a <strong>branch of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/tohoku-shinkansen-jr-pass\">Tohoku Shinkansen<\/a> Line<\/strong>. In fact, the portion of the line between Tokyo and Fukushima is serviced by the Tohoku Shinkansen Line. These smaller trains operate at slower speeds after branching from the Tohoku Shinkansen Line.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Train_Services\">Train Services<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Two types of <strong>Tsubasa bullet trains<\/strong> operate on the Yamagata Shinkansen Line, the <strong>E3-1000 Series<\/strong> and the <strong>E3-2000 Series<\/strong>. The Tsubasa trains are <strong>generally coupled to Yamabiko trains between Fukushima and Tokyo<\/strong>. At Fukushima, they are uncoupled and run independently to Yamagata Station or on to Shinjo.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Tsubasa_Shinkansen\">Tsubasa Shinkansen<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Most Tsubasa Shinaksnen trains offer both Ordinary Car (standard) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/green-pass\">Green Car<\/a> (first class) seating options. Both <strong>reserved and non-reserved seating is available<\/strong>. Seating on Ordinary Cars is in a 3&#215;2 layout, with a layout of 2&#215;2 in Green Class Cars. Each train offers vending machines, food carts with snacks, drinks, and meals, and washroom facilities.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\"  decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/images\/shinkansen-bullet-trains\/yamagata-shinkansen\/Yamagata_Shinkansen_seat_reservation.png\" alt=\"Yamagata Shinkansen seat reservation\" \/><br \/>\nThe entire route from Tokyo to Shinjo is 421 kilometers in length and takes about three and a half hours.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Using_the_Japan_Rail_Pass\">Using the Japan Rail Pass<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>When you arrive in Japan, you will need to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/faq\/japan-rail-pass-exchange-offices\">activate your JR Pass<\/a>. This can be done at the ticketing counter of any major railway station. If you would like to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/faq\/seat-reservation\">reserve seats<\/a> prior to your departure, you may do this at the ticketing counter as well. Trains depart <strong>each hour<\/strong>, and the trip takes approximately <strong>two and a half hours<\/strong>.
