The Tanigawa travels<strong> between Tokyo Station and Echigo-Yuzawa Station<\/strong>. It serves all interim stations along its course.<\/p>\n<p>This train <strong>is mainly in operation during the morning and evening rush hours<\/strong>, benefiting local commuters.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\"  decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/images\/shinkansen-bullet-trains\/nigata-shinkansen\/tanigawa.png\" alt=\"Tanigawa Shinkansen Seat reservation\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Toki_Shinkansen\">Toki Shinkansen<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The second category of train is the faster Toki Shinkansen, named for the rare Japanese crested ibis, that operates <strong>between Tokyo Station and Niigata Station<\/strong>.<img loading=\"lazy\"  decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/images\/shinkansen-bullet-trains\/nigata-shinkansen\/Toki-seat-rservation.png\" alt=\"Toki Shinkansen Seat reservation\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Joetsu_timetable\">Joetsu timetable<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The Joetsu Shinkansen is a <strong>fast and comfortable connection<\/strong> to central Japan. There are departures from Tokyo from around 6:00am until 11:00pm.<\/p>\n<p>Trains are more frequent during peak hours, with a departure <strong>approximately every 30 minutes<\/strong>. You can check the official departures at each station on <a href=\"https:\/\/japantravel.navitime.com\/en\/\">Navitime\u2019s Japan Travel website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Shinkansen high-speed train is the fastest way to travel from Tokyo to Niigata. The direct journey only takes <strong>about 2 hours<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Frequent departures throughout the day make it easy to plan <strong>both day trips and longer stays <\/strong>in the region.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Prices\"><span style=\"font-size: 28px; font-weight: 900;\">Prices<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Below are the typical prices of a Shinkansen ticket between Tokyo and some of the key stations on this route. You can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/faq\/japan-rail-pass-exchange-offices\">activate your JR Pass<\/a> for use by visiting a ticketing office in many of the major train stations. These include four ticket offices at Tokyo Station and the Travel Service Centers at Ueno Station and Niigata Station.<\/p>\n<p>Both the Tanigawa and Toki trains have <strong>reserved and non-reserved seating<\/strong>. If you desire to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/faq\/seat-reservation\">make seat reservations<\/a>, you may do so in advance at the station\u2019s ticketing office. Whether or not you reserve seats, be sure to present your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/\">JR Pass<\/a> at the departure gate.<\/p>\n<p>During the winter ski season, Japan Railways often offers <strong>discounted round-trip tickets <\/strong>for the Joestsu Line.
