These connect Japan\u2019s main island of Honshu to Hokkaido. From Tokyo to Shin-Aomori, the Hayabusa is on the Tohoku Shinkansen line. From Shin-Aomori on Honshu island to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto on Hokkaido, it forms part of the Hokkaido Shinkansen.<\/p>\n<p>Hayabusa trains are operated jointly by JR East and JR Hokkaido.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/faq\/seat-reservation\">Seat reservation<\/a> is required on this service.<\/p>\n<p>Departing from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/tokyo-train-station\">Tokyo Station<\/a>, it <strong>stops at these stations<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u014cmiya<\/li>\n<li>Sendai<\/li>\n<li>Morioka<\/li>\n<li>Shin-Aomori<\/li>\n<li>Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some Hayabusa trains <strong>also stop at a few smaller stations<\/strong>, such as Furukawa, Ichinoseki and Kitakama. However, most Hayabusa trains skip them.Once you arrive, <strong>you will need to take the local Hakodate Liner to reach the city of Hakodate<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The journey from <strong>Tokyo to Hakodate takes approximately 4 hours and 4 minutes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Hayate_Shinkansen\">Hayate Shinkansen<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Hayate trains usually operate <strong>one return service per day<\/strong> during the morning and late evening between Morioka (Tohoku Shinkansen line) and Shin Hakodate and one return service per day between Shin Aomori and Shin Hakodate.<\/p>\n<p>It typically stops <strong>at the following stations<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Shin-Aomori<\/li>\n<li>Okutsugaru-Imabetsu<\/li>\n<li>Kikonai<\/li>\n<li>Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some Hayate trains also make stops at Ninohe, Hachinohe, and Shichinohe-Towada.<\/p>\n<p>Again, it is mandatory to book your seat before boarding the Hayate train, since <strong>there are no non-reserved cars<\/strong>. If all reserved seats have already been booked, standing tickets will be made available.<\/p>\n<p>Once you arrive in Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto, you can take the Hakodate Liner to Hakodate Station. This service runs 16 round-trip shuttles daily, with travel times ranging from 15 to 22 minutes. There are usually two morning departures to Hakodate and two evening departures to Shin-Aomori.<\/p>\n<p>You can find the full Hokkaido Shinkansen schedule using <a href=\"https:\/\/japantravel.navitime.com\/en\/\">Navitime\u2019s travel planner<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Tokyo_to_Sapporo_and_Hokkaido\">Tokyo to Sapporo and Hokkaido<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Traveling from Tokyo to Sapporo by train is easy and comfortable thanks to Japan\u2019s high-speed rail network. The journey <strong>combines two Shinkansen lines<\/strong> and a limited express service.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll start by boarding the Tohoku Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Shin-Aomori. This <strong>continues seamlessly as the Hokkaido Shinkansen<\/strong> to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto.<\/p>\n<p>You do not need to make a transfer if you&#8217;re on a direct Hayabusa or Hayate train. The first part of the journey takes around 4 to 4.5 hours.<\/p>\n<p>From Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto, transfer to the Limited Express Hokuto, which takes you <strong>directly to Sapporo Station in about 3 hours and 30 minutes<\/strong>. In total, the trip takes roughly 7.5 to 8 hours, depending on your connection, and is fully covered by the Japan Rail Pass.<\/p>\n<p>From Sapporo, you can easily get to <strong>New-Chitose Airport<\/strong> taking a Rapid Airport Express via the JR Chitose line, which is also included in the JR Pass.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Super_Hokuto_trains\"><strong>Super Hokuto trains<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The <strong><em>Hokuto<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>Super Hokuto<\/em><\/strong> are limited express train services between Sapporo and Hakodate in Hokkaido operated by Hokkaido Railway Company (JR Hokkaido). It takes The journey time of the <em>Super Hokuto<\/em> is approximately 30 minutes faster than the regular Hokuto.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Gran_Class_cars\">Gran Class cars<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>The\u00a0Hayabusa trains feature <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/shinkansen-gran-class\">Gran Class<\/a> cars<\/strong> &#8211; first-class travel that far exceeds that of the green class. The Gran Class involves the use of a\u00a0special train car with ample seating room, as well as the constant attention of your host or hostess.\u00a0Trains generally have one Gran Class car along with standard and green cars.<\/p>\n<p>The train fare itself is covered by the Japan Rail Pass, but\u00a0<strong>holders must pay for an additional Gran Class charge<\/strong>, that is, the difference to the standard or Green Class ticket (depending on your pass). Additionally, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/regional-passes\/jr-east-south-hokkaido-rail-pass\">JR East\u2013South Hokkaido Rail Pass<\/a> includes travel on most forms of transport between Kanto (Tokyo), Tohoku and southern Hokkaido.<\/p>\n<p>If you only need a pass for within Hokkaido, the JR Hokkaido Rail Pass and the Hokkaido Free Pass cover travel between Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto and Sapporo.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"The_future_plans_for_the_Hokkaido_Shinkansen\">The future plans for the Hokkaido Shinkansen<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The <strong>goal for the Hokkaido Shinkansen is for it to reach Sapporo<\/strong>. Plans to extend the line to Sapporo were slated to be completed by 2030 but, due largely to tunnel construction difficulties, have been delayed to 2039.<\/p>\n<p>The 211.3 km extension will be approximately 76% in tunnels, including major tunnels such as Oshima, Teine, and Shiribeshi.
