Although the shrine was later relocated, the district retained the name Akihabara, meaning \u201cautumn leaf field.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The modern Akihabara Station has a long history. It was originally <strong>opened in 1890<\/strong> for hauling freight, and went on to serve passengers in 1925. Two side platforms serve the former on the fourth floor, and two island platforms serve the latter on the second floor. The Tokyo Metro and Tsukuba Express can be accessed on the underground level.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Transit can also be acquired at the station\u2019s bus terminal<\/strong>, which serves both route and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/buses\">highway buses<\/a> as well as taxis. Direct buses are available to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/theme-parks-japan\">Tokyo Disneyland<\/a> and Haneda Airport. Highway buses run to Osaka, Kyoto, and more destinations in the Kansai region and the Gunma, Yamagata and Iwate precfectures. Also, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/transporting-luggage-forwarding\">coin lockers<\/a> for luggage are available near the Central and Showa-dori Gates.<\/p>\n<p>Akihabara Electric Town can be easily accessed using the Akihabara Electric Town Gate. Check the next section for more information on this exciting area!<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Things_to_do_in_Akihabara\"><strong>Things to do in Akihabara<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span id=\"Shop_for_top_tech\"><strong>Shop for top tech<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Akihabara Electric Town<\/strong> is a shopping district famous for its many electronics and technology shops. Video game and card game shops are also popular.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Internet manga caf\u00e9s and maid caf\u00e9s<\/strong> \u2013 restaurants in which the waitresses dress and act as anime characters \u2013 attract many diehard fans. It\u2019s also common to see cosplayers, often advertising businesses or handing out flyers.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Soak_up_local_culture\"><strong>Soak up local culture<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The area is also home to the <strong>AKB48 Theater<\/strong>, a small performance venue associated with a Japanese pop idol group that originated in Akihabara and takes its name from the district. As a center of influence in popular entertainment, the area often holds conventions and pop-up events.<\/p>\n<p>You can also visit <strong>Kanda<\/strong><strong> Shrine <\/strong><strong>(Kanda Myojin)<\/strong>, which dates back to the year 730. It\u2019s been rebuilt several times due to earthquakes and fires, but is best known for selling protective talismans, including charms intended to safeguard electronic devices.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re visiting in spring, <em>Kanda Matsuri<\/em>, one of Tokyo\u2019s major Shinto festivals, takes place at the shrine in mid-May during odd-numbered years.<\/p>\n<p>Where will your travels in Japan take you?
