The station first opened its doors in 1910.<\/p>\n<p>Takadanobaba literally means \u201cTakada\u2019s horse grounds\u201d. The area is <strong>named for a baba, or horseback riding and racing grounds<\/strong> which used to occupy the area, and the Takata, the family who built it in the 1600s.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In keeping with this tradition, demonstrations of <strong>archery on horseback are held in nearby Toyama Park<\/strong> each October.<\/p>\n<p>Today, Takadanobaba is <strong>known as a college town<\/strong> with a large student population. The Japan Rail Pass can be used on this popular line.<\/p>\n<p>Takadanobaba Station is <strong>also home to several non-JR lines<\/strong>. These include Seibu Railway\u2019s Seibu Shinjuku Line and the Tokyo Metro Tozai Line T-03. Tozai Line trains also run on the Chuo-Sobu and Toyo Rapid Railway Lines.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Takadanobaba_Station_Layout\">Takadanobaba Station Layout<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Takadanobaba Station <strong>has two levels, one with ticket counters, coin lockers<\/strong> and other amenities. The other level houses the train platforms.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/yamanote-line\">Yamanote Line<\/a>\u2019s island platform exists parallel to 2 <strong>Seibu Shinjuku Line platforms<\/strong>. The platforms are connected by transfer gates on the ground level, located by the main Waseda Exit, as well as by an overhead transfer concourse.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tracks 1 and 2 serve the Yamanote Line<\/strong>, while tracks 3 through 5 serve the Seibu Shinjuku Line. The Tokyo Metro Tozai Line uses two subway platforms.<\/p>\n<p>While waiting for your train,<strong> listen for the theme music from <em>Astro Boy<\/em><\/strong>. This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/movies-to-watch-japan\">Japanese film<\/a> and TV anime franchise began as the <em>Mighty Atom<\/em> in Japanese manga all the way back 1952.<\/p>\n<p>The music is <strong>played prior to each train departure<\/strong>, honoring the fact that the story was set in the Takadanobaba area. Astro Boy is said to have been \u201cborn\u201d in Takadanobaba in 2003.<\/p>\n<p>The station has numerous exits, but the best-known is the <strong>Waseda exit, situated in the northeast part <\/strong>of the station. This leads onto the street of the same name, from where you can take a bus to the nearby Waseda University.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"How_to_get_to_Takadanobaba_Station\">How to get to Takadanobaba Station<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Reaching Takadanobaba Station is <strong>straightforward using the JR Pass<\/strong>, thanks to its central location on the JR Yamanote Line. The area is also a favorite of foodies, as there are <strong>over 100 ramen restaurants and eateries<\/strong> offering exotic cuisine.<\/p>\n<p>Next to the station is the <strong>Big Box building<\/strong>, which has become a symbol of Takadanobaba. This shopping center houses an Uniqlo clothing store, gymnasium, swimming pool, bowling alley, arcade, and fast-food restaurants and caf\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<p>Other notable tourist stop-offs in Takadanobaba include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Mickey House<\/strong>, an English conversation caf\u00e9 and bar<\/li>\n<li><strong>Toyama Park<\/strong>, a must\u2013visit during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/best-cherry-blossom-spots-in-japan\">cherry blossom season<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Additionally, you\u2019ll see artifacts paying homage to Astro Boy throughout the neighborhood. These include <strong>2 large murals of Osamu Tezuka\u2019s artwork<\/strong> across from the station.<\/p>\n<p>You can also <strong>bring home Astro Boy memorabilia<\/strong> from the numerous bookshops or the Village Vanguard.
