It&#8217;s <strong>only available for foreigners<\/strong> visiting Japan with a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/faq\/temporary-visitor\">Temporary Visitor<\/a>\u201d stamp (or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/faq\/japanese-nationals\">Japanese nationals<\/a> who have lived abroad for 10 years or more).<\/p>\n<p>Once you have purchased your Japan Rail Pass, you&#8217;ll receive an <strong>exchange voucher by mail. <\/strong>You can receive the voucher at your home address or, alternatively, we can mail it to your hotel or most accommodation in Japan.<\/p>\n<p>To<strong> use your JR Pass,<\/strong> you must validate and exchange your order for the actual pass once you arrive in Japan. Use your pass for JR and Shinkansen trains, as well as <strong>JR Buses<\/strong>,<strong> JR Ferries<\/strong>, and <strong>airport transfers<\/strong>, like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/narita-express\">Narita Express<\/a> in Tokyo and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/haruka-express-kansai-airport\">Haruka Express<\/a> in Kyoto and Osaka.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/tokyo-monorail\">Tokyo Monorail <\/a>is also accesible with the JR Pass, along with some <strong>useful lines for local transport<\/strong>, like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/takanawa-gateway-station\">Yamanote Line<\/a> in Tokyo or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/osaka-city-loop-line\">Osaka&#8217;s Loop Line<\/a>. Simply pick up a <strong>subsidized complementary ticket<\/strong> to take either of these services.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Seat_reservation\">Seat reservation<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>With your JR Pass in hand you can start exploring Japan on the Shinkansen and extensive rail system!\u00a0\u00a0<strong>You can go to any JR ticket office<\/strong> (Midori-no-madoguchi), <strong>to make a seat reservation<\/strong>. Here are some tips on selecting your seats in advance:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There&#8217;s <strong>no additional charge<\/strong> for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/faq\/seat-reservation\">making a seat reservation<\/a>. with your JR Pass.<\/li>\n<li>You cannot book a seat once you have boarded the train, so make sure to do so before departure.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s possible to make all seat reservations for your trip in just one visit to a ticket office.<\/li>\n<li>To change or cancel your reserved seating, visit a JR ticket office.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To book, ticket office staff will help you select your preferred departure time, or you can also look up the train times in advance. To do so, scan the QR code on your JR Pass and select the service you wish to travel on. The final step is to choose your preferred car and seat.<\/p>\n<p>Once the process is complete, you\u2019ll be given a <strong>reservation ticket<\/strong>. Monitors will guide you on where to go if you have a seat reservation (and which direction to go if you don\u2019t.).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: If you\u2019re traveling on the <strong>Nozomi service in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/golden-week-travel-tips\">Golden Week<\/a><\/strong> (April 26\u2013May 6), seat reservations are essential.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Narita Express<\/strong> also has obligatory seat reservations, but there\u2019s no extra charge.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"How_to_find_your_car_and_seat\">How to find your car and seat<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Find your <strong>car number<\/strong> on your ticket and stand at the correct <strong>car point<\/strong> on the platform. Line up behind the white line and wait for your train. Seat numbers are indicated above the window. You can also sit in any seat if there&#8217;s an unreserved carriage.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Traveling_in_first_class_and_other_extras\">Traveling in first class and other extras<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Many long-distance trains also offer Green Cars (superior class). With a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/green-pass\"><strong>JR Green Pass<\/strong><\/a> you can use either the coach or the superior Green Car class cars.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>standard JR Pass<\/strong> is only for coach class cars. You can pay an extra fee to travel in a Green Car if you decide to upgrade your journey.<\/p>\n<p>If you are intending to travel in a Green Car, <strong>you must reserve a seat for a specific departure time<\/strong> in advance.
