Bus services to the park are often seasonal or infrequent.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Getting_to_Shiretoko_by_train_and_bus\">Getting to Shiretoko by train and bus<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The closest railway station to Shiretoko National Park is<strong> JR Shiretoko Shari Station <\/strong>in Shari Town, around 40 km from the park.<\/p>\n<p>You can use your Japan Rail Pass on train services from Abashiri or Kushiro to Shiretoko-Shiri using the Senm\u014d main line.<\/p>\n<p>From Shiretoko Shari Station, you should take a<strong> bus to Utoro, the base for Shiretoko sightseeing<\/strong>. Take the<strong> Hokkaido Shinkansen to Shin-Hakodate Station<\/strong> then Hokuto limited express or Super Hokuto trains to Sapporo station.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Driving_to_Shiretoko_National_Park\">Driving to Shiretoko National Park<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This is the most convenient way to reach Shiretoko National Park. If you\u2019re traveling from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/cities\/tokyo-travel-guide\">Tokyo<\/a>, you can get to Sapporo riding the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/tohoku-shinkansen-jr-pass\">Tohoku<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/hokkaido-shinkansen\">Hokkaido Shinkansen<\/a> using your JR Rail Pass and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/renting-a-car-in-japan\">rent a car<\/a> in Sapporo<\/strong>. It provides tourist information and has several facilities for visitors.<\/p>\n<p>You can watch a <strong>20-minute overview on a large screen<\/strong> of the park\u2019s highlights and areas that cannot be accessed on a tour.<\/p>\n<p>There is also a <strong>shop at Shiretoko National Park Center<\/strong> selling souvenirs and basic hiking equipment. From majestic lakes and mountains to rugged cliffs and rocky beaches, there is a lot to explore.<\/p>\n<p>Shiretoko was designated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/unesco-world-heritage-sites-in-japan\">UNESCO World Heritage Site<\/a> status in 2005 due to the importance of its ecosystem and biodiversity.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Visit_the_Shiretoko_Five_Lakes\">Visit the Shiretoko Five Lakes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This is a <strong>collection of 5 small lakes<\/strong> that were formed by the eruption of Mount Io with water from underground springs. The lakes are a great base from which to enjoy the scenery of Shiretoko.<\/p>\n<p>There is a wooden boardwalk from the parking lot to the first lake. The cruises travel along the<strong> western coast of the Shiretoko Peninsula,<\/strong> making it possible to see the rugged cliffs and waterfalls that are otherwise inaccessible to tourists.<\/p>\n<p>A wide variety of wildlife can also be viewed from the boat tours. <strong>Brown bears and their cubs <\/strong>are often seen on the rocky shore.<\/p>\n<p>Other animals you might be lucky enough to spot include <strong>dolphins, whales, <\/strong>and various types of seabirds.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Waterfalls_in_Shiretoko_National_Park\">Waterfalls in Shiretoko National Park<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>There are several waterfalls around Shiretoko National Park. Just a 20-minute walk from Shiretoko National Park Nature Center, <strong>Furepe Waterfall<\/strong> is one of the best for visitors.<\/p>\n<p>There is an <strong>observation deck with magnificent views <\/strong>of the cliffs and sea. It is 30 meters high and 50 meters tall, splitting into 2 streams part way down. There are steps alongside the waterfall which you can climb for the best views.<\/p>\n<p>Other waterfalls worth exploring at Shiretoko National Park include <strong>Kamuiwakka Hot Falls<\/strong> and <strong>Shiretoko Pass<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Winter_in_Shiretoko\">Winter in Shiretoko<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In winter, you can <strong>experience the drift ice at Shiretoko National Park<\/strong>. The ice drifts across the Sea of Okhotsk from northeastern Russia. It can be seen from the end of January until early April.<\/p>\n<p>The coastal road on the Shiretoko peninsula\u2019s west coast is a good viewing point.
