These highlights make it well worth making a stop here while touring the country with a JR Pass.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><strong>Yamadera <\/strong><\/strong>&#8211; Perched on a mountaintop within the city limits, this temple complex features stunning views. The <strong>Yamagata Hanagasa Festival<\/strong> (5-7 August) is one of the T\u014dhoku region\u2019s 4 major festivals, featuring a huge parade with 10,000 dancers.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival<\/strong> takes place every 2 years, showcasing the achievements of the genre.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The <\/strong><strong><em>Imoni-kai<\/em><\/strong><strong> (taro potato party)<\/strong> is a common event in the fall, where picnic spots around the city are used to cook taro potatoes, thin-sliced meat, and vegetables in large pots.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Tourist_attractions_in_Yamagata_Prefecture\">Tourist attractions in Yamagata Prefecture<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>When visiting Yamagata, you should <strong>take some time to get out of the city<\/strong> and explore some of the wider prefecture.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>snowy mountain resorts<\/strong> are perfect for lovers of winter sports.<\/p>\n<p>The various <strong>spas and hot springs<\/strong> are the places to go if you\u2019re looking to get some R&amp;R.<\/p>\n<p>Or, if you simply love <strong>being close to nature<\/strong>, take a hike through the mountains and forests that make up Yamagata\u2019s wild side.<\/p>\n<p>Things to do in Yamagata Prefecture include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Mount Zao<\/strong> &#8211; One 40-minute bus ride from Yamagata Station and you\u2019ll be on Mt. Zao \u2014 a snow-covered volcanic mountain. Home to some of Japan\u2019s best ski resorts, it is a top destination in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/snow-season-japan\">snow season<\/a>. It is equally great for hikers. Watch out for the snow monsters as you go!
