Sometimes called <em>shinobi<\/em>, or \u201cthose who act in stealth,\u201d the<strong> fighters of the Shiga Prefecture<\/strong> earned a reputation for their fighting skills as early as the 11<sup>th<\/sup> century.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The terrain of this region was ideal for those who wished to evade detection, such as bandits or those defeated in <\/strong>conflict<strong>.<\/strong> Autonomous communities were formed in the mountains and valleys, and there the early ninja perfected their craft<strong>. During the 15<sup>th<\/sup> and 16<sup>th<\/sup> centuries, ninja were<\/strong><strong> often hired as mercenaries<\/strong>, or paid soldiers, by the leaders of warring states. <strong>From the 1600s onward, most ninja were<\/strong><strong>\u00a0employed in espionage<\/strong>, spying on regional lords, or as castle guards.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The ninja have<\/strong><strong>\u00a0since been stereotyped and romanticized in traditional <em>Kabuki <\/em>theater and in many elements of popular culture<\/strong> \u2013 movies, cartoons, and manga. While fictional ninjas are meant to entertain, the Japanese countryside still contains the relics of the actual ninjas that were.<\/p>\n<p>What ninja secrets await you in and around Koka? We\u2019ll help you to <strong>discover all that this unique region has to offer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"How_to_get_to_Koka_Ninja_Village\">How to get to Koka Ninja Village<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Getting to Koka from Japan\u2019s major cities is easy when you use your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\">Japan Rail Pass<\/a>!<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"From_Tokyo_to_Koka\">From Tokyo to Koka<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Take the direct Hikari train on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/shinkansen-bullet-trains#TokaidoShinkansen\">JR Tokaido Shinkansen line<\/a> from Tokyo to Maibara Station. Then, take the <strong>Tokaido Line to Kusatsu Station, and the Kusatsu Line to Koka<\/strong>. The trip takes approximately four hours and is <strong>covered in its entirety by the JR Pass<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"From_Kyoto_to_Koka\">From Kyoto to Koka<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Travelling from Kyoto, the journey is similar but shorter: take the Tokaido Line to Kusatsu Station, and the Kusatsu Line to Koka. <strong>This trip takes only one hour<\/strong> and is covered by the JR Pass.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"From_Osaka_to_Koka\">From Osaka to Koka<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>From <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/osaka-city-loop-line\">Osaka<\/a>, the journey is slightly longer than from Kyoto. Simply take the Tokaido Line to Kusatsu Station, and proceed to Koka on the Kusatsu Line. <strong>The trip takes about one and half hours<\/strong> and is covered by the JR Pass.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Ninja Village is a thirty-minute walk from Koka Station.<\/strong> Alternatively, <strong>a shuttle bus departs from the station\u2019s north entrance<\/strong>, or a taxi may be used. Because of the distance between attractions in the area, some choose to hire a rental car.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Things_to_do_in_Ninja_Village\"><strong>Things to do in Ninja Village<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>The Koka Ninja Village consists of several antiquated dwellings once used by the legendary ninja.<\/strong> It is located in the midst of an imposing forest. Once there, you can watch as village staff demonstrate the hidden compartments and trap doors built into one of the ninja homes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Then, you can train to become a ninja yourself.<\/strong> The village offers a <em>shuriken <\/em>throwing star range with various targets, and a nine-stage obstacle course. If you brave the course, you can attempt to scale walls and walk on water using authentic ninja tools.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Keep in mind that the Ninja Village is closed on Mondays.<\/strong> Admission is \u00a51,030. English translation is not typically available.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Ninja_house_and_other_attractions\"><strong>Ninja house and other attractions<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Your pilgrimage to Koka may include other ninja-themed activities as well.<\/strong> The Ninja House, or <em>Ninjutsu Yashiki<\/em>, is a nearly 300-year-old ninja dwelling. This mansion, too, is equipped with trap doors, secret passages, and devices to protect the residents or provide an easy escape. Exhibits inform about the life and fighting style of the ninja, and <em>shuriken <\/em>throwing is available there as well.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Ninja house<\/strong><strong>\u00a0is a twenty-minute walk from the JR Konan Station.<\/strong> It is closed yearly from December 27 to January 2.
