{"id":14707,"date":"2021-02-19T10:17:11","date_gmt":"2021-02-19T09:17:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog?p=14707"},"modified":"2021-02-19T10:17:11","modified_gmt":"2021-02-19T09:17:11","slug":"haneda-airport-access-line","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/haneda-airport-access-line","title":{"rendered":"New train line from Haneda Airport to Tokyo Station"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>JR East has announced that it will open a <strong>new train line that will directly connect Haneda Airport to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/tokyo-train-station\">Tokyo Station<\/a><\/strong> in the city center, cutting the total travel time down by half to just 18 minutes and making it easier for holders of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/the-japan-rail-pass\">JR Pass<\/a> to access the Japanese capital upon arrival.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"toc_container\" class=\"toc_white no_bullets\"><p class=\"toc_title\">Table of Contents<\/p><ul class=\"toc_list\"><li><a href=\"#Current_travel_from_Tokyo_to_Haneda\"><span class=\"toc_number toc_depth_1\">1<\/span> Current travel from Tokyo to Haneda<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#When_the_new_line_will_open\"><span class=\"toc_number toc_depth_1\">2<\/span> When the new line will open<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#Haneda_Airport_New_Station\"><span class=\"toc_number toc_depth_1\">3<\/span> Haneda Airport New Station<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/div>\n<h2><span id=\"Current_travel_from_Tokyo_to_Haneda\">Current travel from Tokyo to Haneda<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Although <strong>Haneda Airport is the closest airport to Tokyo<\/strong>, and getting from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/narita-airport-to-tokyo\">Narita Airport to Tokyo<\/a> takes significantly longer, up to one hour, there is not currently any direct train line connecting the 2 destinations.<\/p>\n<p>At present, the <strong>closest main station in Tokyo which directly connects to <\/strong><strong>Haneda Airport <\/strong>is Shinagawa Station via the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/tokyo-monorail\">Tokyo Monorail<\/a>, approximately a 15-minute ride away.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\"  decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-344\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/narita-express-map.gif\" alt=\"Narita Express route map\" width=\"560\" height=\"440\" \/><\/p>\n<p>However, to get from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/haneda-airport-to-tokyo\">Haneda Airport to Tokyo<\/a> Station, it is currently necessary to <strong>transfer at either Shinagawa station<\/strong> (Keikyu line) or <strong>Hamamatsucho station<\/strong> (Tokyo Monorail), and the total travel time is approximately 38 minutes.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"When_the_new_line_will_open\">When the new line will open<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The new direct line announced by JR East and approved by the Japanese Transport Ministry is tentatively named the Haneda Airport Access Line and is <strong>expected to begin operations in 2029<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Once open, Japan Rail Pass holders will be able to <strong>travel directly between Haneda Airport and Tokyo without having to pay any extra fees<\/strong> or transfer between trains along the route.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Extending an existing freight train JR line to the airport by roughly 5 kilometers<\/strong> is expected to cost roughly \u00a5300 billion, which includes construction costs for an extensive tunnel.
