Instead, it is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/japan-holidays\">public national holiday<\/a> that <strong>honors the hard work of laborers<\/strong>, more akin to US Labor Day.<\/p>\n<p>Because of this, one of the most <strong>notable events that take place on the day<\/strong> is the Nagano Labor Festival, an event that encourages discussion about issues such as the environment and human rights.<\/p>\n<p>Many trade <strong>unions in Japan also celebrate Labor Day on May 1st<\/strong> by holding large rallies in Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"The_history_of_Thanksgiving_in_Japan\">The history of Thanksgiving in Japan<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The origins of Labor Thanksgiving Day <strong>stretch back over 2,000 years<\/strong> to when rice first began to be cultivated in Japan and it was an ancient <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/tsukimi-harvest-moon-festival\">Autumn Harvest Festival<\/a> named Niinamesai.<\/p>\n<p>The first recorded Niinamesai ritual dates to the years 660\u2013585 BC, when the legendary Emperor Jimmu ruled Japan and <strong>was used to celebrate the autumn harvest of rice<\/strong>, wheat, barley, and beans.<\/p>\n<p>Later, between 667\u2013686 AD, Niinamesai <strong>became more associated with celebrating the hard work of the year<\/strong> so far, and the reigning Emperor, Tenmu, would hold a special ceremony in which he tasted the year\u2019s rice for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>The day was <strong>not established as Kinro Kansha no Hi until after World War II<\/strong> in 1948, when it was redesignated as Labor Thanksgiving Day to reflect important changes in the Constitution of Japan, especially the expansion of worker\u2019s rights.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"How_do_Japanese_celebrate_Thanksgiving\">How do Japanese celebrate Thanksgiving?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>While Thanksgiving in the United States is celebrated with enormous parades, huge sports games, and tons of food, in Japan the day is generally a <strong>quiet public holiday and celebrated with a family trip<\/strong> to a green space or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/theme-parks-japan\">amusement park<\/a>, followed by a modest dinner.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike in the US during Thanksgiving, <strong>most businesses in Japan remain open<\/strong> during the day, although many workers take the day off to attend labor organization meetings.<\/p>\n<p>One of <strong>the biggest traditions of Japanese Thanksgiving<\/strong> is for elementary school-age children to make cards or prepare gifts to give to workers in the labor sector, including police officers, firefighters, and hospital staff, to celebrate their dedication during American visiting Japan during Thanksgiving<\/strong> and craving the traditional US fare, you can still find turkey dinners at international hotels or American-friendly restaurants in major cities Tokyo, you might also opt to <strong>buy a turkey yourself<\/strong> at one of the many international markets and delicatessens in the city and hold your own US-style Thanksgiving Dinner.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Other_traditional_holidays_in_Japan\">Other traditional holidays in Japan<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>While Thanksgiving is not the biggest national holiday in Japan, there are plenty of <strong>other festivities throughout the year<\/strong> to enjoy when visiting the country.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the most important celebrations in Japan include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/christmas-in-japan\"><strong>Christmas<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; While not a national holiday, it has become popular to heavily decorate public spaces in Japan, and locals have developed the curious tradition of eating KFC chicken on the day.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/new-year-in-japan\"><strong>New Year<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; While December 31st is not a public holiday, New Year\u2019s Day (known as Shogatsu in Japanese) is the most important national holiday in Japan, and many businesses often remain closed until 3rd.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/valentines-day-white-day-japan\"><strong>White Day<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; Held on March 14th White Day is considered the opposite of St. Valentines, in that men are expected to gift women with cakes or chocolates.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/golden-week-travel-tips\"><strong>Golden Week<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; Almost a full week of national holidays, from April 29th (known as<br \/>\nShowa Day) to May 4th (known as Greenery Day), that many locals use to take a short trip to visit family.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Those planning to visit <strong>Japan during Golden Week<\/strong> should be aware that this busy holiday period is almost the opposite of the quiet Japanese Thanksgiving celebrations, and public transportation is often very busy.
