Six aspects are considered vital to an ideal Japanese garden; these include coolness, subtlety of design, scenic views, wisdom and respect, serenity, and spaciousness. <strong>This garden features ponds and natural landscape features<\/strong> such as hills and streams, and structures such as pavilions and tea houses.<\/p>\n<p><em>How to Get There: <\/em>Use your JR Pass to travel to Kanazawa Station. One to three JR buses per hour depart from the station. This garden\u2019s name is derived from a proverb of Confucius, in which he explained that a ruler should consider the needs of his subjects first, and his own \u201cpleasure after.\u201d Construction began in 1687, and the garden was opened to the public in 1884. <strong>The Okayama Castle can be viewed from this garden.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>How to Get There: <\/em>Use your JR Pass to travel by train to Okayama Station. It is famous for o<strong>ver three thousand <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/best-places-plum-blossoms\">plum trees that bloom<\/a> in early spring.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>How to Get There: <\/em>From Shinagawa or Ueno Station in Tokyo, take a limited express train on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/jr-joban-line\">JR Joban Line<\/a> to Mito Station. The garden is a 30-minute walk from the station or 15 minutes by bus. If you would like to tour this garden, be sure to make reservations in advance.<\/p>\n<p><em>How to Get There: <\/em>Take the Hankyu Kyoto Line to Katsura Station. From the station, the garden can be reached by a 15-minute walk.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Kokedera_Kyoto\">Kokedera (Kyoto)<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The <strong><em>Kokedera<\/em>, or Moss Temple<\/strong>, is so named because it is home to 120 different kinds of moss. It is considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The garden was originally part of a royal villa before it became a temple nearly 1,000 years ago. Reservations must be made in advance via postal mail, and visitors are required to participate in Buddhist chanting and scripture copying before viewing the gardens.<\/p>\n<p><em>How to Get There: <\/em>From <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/getting-around-kyoto\">Kyoto Station<\/a>, take the Karasuma Line to Shijo Station; the Hankyu Kyoto Line to Katsura Station; and the Hankyu Arashiyama Line to Matsuo Taisha Station. The garden is a 20-minute walk from the station.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Ryoan-ji_Temple_Kyoto\"><strong>Ryoan-ji Temple (Kyoto)<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The <strong>Ryoan-ji Temple<\/strong> is home to the most famous rock garden in Japan. It became a Zen temple in 1450, but the designer and exact meaning of the garden are unknown. Ideas on its meaning range from islands, to a tiger carrying cubs across the\u00a0water, to the abstract concept of infinity.<\/p>\n<p><em>How to Get There: <\/em>Use your JR Pass to travel to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/getting-around-kyoto\">Kyoto Station<\/a>. Take a 30-minute ride on a JR bus to the temple.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Adachi_Museum_of_Art\"><strong>Adachi Museum of Art<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A few hours from Kyoto, in the north west of Honshu, you can view the gardens surrounding the <strong>Adachi Museum of Art<\/strong>. This garden has won the <em>Journal of Japanese Gardening<\/em>\u2019s award for best garden every year since 2003.<\/p>\n<p><em>How to Get There: <\/em>From Okayama. Then, transfer to the JR Yakumo Limited Express to Matsue. Then, take a JR rapid train from Matsue Station to Yasugi Station. A free shuttle bus to the museum runs once per hour.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Shinjuku_Gyoen_Tokyo\">Shinjuku Gyoen (Tokyo)<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Great for<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/best-cherry-blossom-spots-in-japan\"> viewing cherry blossoms<\/a> in spring, the <strong>Shinjuku Gyoen<\/strong> is one of Tokyo\u2019s best gardens. The park is a 10-minute walk to the east of the station.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Imperial_Palace_East_Gardens_Tokyo\">Imperial Palace East Gardens (Tokyo)<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/tokyo-imperial-palace\"><strong>Imperial Palace East Gardens<\/strong><\/a> formerly housed an Edo Period castle, the foundations of which are still visible.
