These trains were designed, not only as an efficient mode of transportation but as an experience in themselves. Getting there truly was half the fun.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, however, the use of luxury trains has largely given way to the rapid travel offered by the shinkansen. The last of the \u201cblue trains\u201d ceased operation in 2015. While some have called this \u201cthe end of an era,\u201d luxury seekers are not to be disappointed by Japan\u2019s all-new line up of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/green-pass\">first-class rail<\/a> accommodations. That is the immersive experience promised by <strong>JR East<\/strong>&#8216;s Train Suite Shiki-Shima.<\/p>\n<p>The Shiki-Shima, whose name means \u201cIsland of Four Seasons,\u201d <strong>began operation on May 1, 2017<\/strong>. <strong>Journeys depart from Ueno Station in Tokyo<\/strong> and meander through the natural scenery and interesting stops in the regions of <strong>Tohoku and Hokkaido.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Shiki-Shima\u2019s route is full of excursions<\/strong> to richly cultural sites such as the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/nikko-itinerary\">Nikko<\/a> Toshogu Shrine<\/strong>, relaxing <em>onsen<\/em>, the shops of skilled artisans, and local fish markets.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Shiki-Shima has been designed by Ken Okuyama<\/strong>, known for his luxury-car work with Ferrari, Maserati, and Porsche, and features<strong> ten cars with a capacity of thirty-four passengers<\/strong>. Six cars house seventeen rooms, each lavishly decorated in contemporary Japanese style. It even has its own melody for arrival in stations, &#8220;Train suite&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The rooms include western style beds, as well as traditional Japanese tables and seating<\/strong>. The suite includes a bath constructed of Japanese cypress. The remaining four cars are designated for dining, a lounge, and sightseeing cars for viewing the scenery. The aptly named &#8220;<strong>glass train&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0has floor to ceiling windows along the carriages.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1309\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1309\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\"  decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1309\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/train-suite-shikishima-800x450.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1309\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Exterior of the Train Suite Shiki-Shima<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><span id=\"Itineraries_and_prices\">Itineraries and prices<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Both<strong> four day, three night and two days, one-night train cruises<\/strong> are available. Routes and stops vary by season. <strong>Fares begin at \u00a5320,000 per person.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The application is currently only available in Japanese, but international travelers can receive assistance through the Japan National Tourism Organization. Applicants are chosen using a lottery system. <strong>Beginning in 2018, tickets became available through international travel agents.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Twilight_Express_Mizukaze\">Twilight Express Mizukaze<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Imagine a leisurely stroll along the coast of the Sea of Japan, views of majestic Mount Daisen and the <strong>Seto Inland Sea<\/strong> Islands in the distance. Now, imagine viewing the breathtaking scenery of <strong>western Japan<\/strong> from the comfort of your own room while traveling to your next destination.<\/p>\n<p>This is just the experience that the <strong>Twilight Express Mizukaze,\u00a0operated by JR West<\/strong>, seeks to deliver. The name of the train itself can be translated \u201cthe train that speeds through the beautiful land of Japan like the wind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Twilight Express Mizukaze has been described as \u201ca rail car with the superior quality of a hotel.\u201d This sightseeing train\u2019s accommodations leave nothing to be desired: The ten cars can house up to thirty passengers. <strong>The six sleeper cars offer a nostalgic art deco style and include western style beds<\/strong> that retract for extra room during the day. The suite \u2013 which uniquely encompasses an entire rail car \u2013 provides not only a sleeping area, but a large \u201cliving room\u201d or sitting area, and a fully equipped personal bathroom facility, complete with a full-size bathtub.<\/p>\n<p>Meals are prepared daily by onboard chefs in classic <em>washoku<\/em>, or Japanese style, often utilizing ingredients sourced locally from stops along the route. <strong>Meals may be enjoyed in the dining car alongside enormous panoramic viewing windows.<\/strong> The train also has a lounge car with a bar and two sightseeing cars with outdoor viewing platforms located on each end.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1311\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1311\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\"  decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1311\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/twilight-express-mizukaze-800x504.jpg\" alt=\"Twilight Express Mizukaze\" width=\"700\" height=\"441\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1311\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Exterior of the Twilight Express Mizukaze<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><span id=\"Itineraries_and_prices-2\">Itineraries and prices<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The Twilight Express began operation on June 16, 2017. The Sanyo Course <strong>from Kyoto Station to Shimonoseki Station<\/strong>, and the northern Sanin Course <strong>from Osaka Station<\/strong> to Shimonoseki Station, both have a duration of two days and one night.<\/p>\n<p>The Sanyo\/Sanin Course includes the routes taken by both of the other courses and lasts three days and two nights, winding through the beautiful scenery of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/things-to-do-in-kyoto\">Kyoto<\/a>, Matsue, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/miyajima-travel-guide\">Miyajima<\/a>, and Izumo. <strong>Tickets may be purchased upon your arrival in Japan.<\/strong> At time of publication, prices were yet to be announced.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Seven_Stars_Kyushu\">Seven Stars Kyushu<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Of course, the Twilight Express and the Shiki-Shima are not the only luxury trains Japan has to offer.
