If you are planning a visit to Japan, consider booking travel on one of these trains, using the following tips.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Before the advent of the bullet train, there was a time when <strong>overnight trains were common across Japan<\/strong>. The country\u2019s elite, as well as tourists, traveled in style using these \u201cblue sleeper trains.\u201d Today, however, luxury night trains are becoming a novelty, harkening back to an earlier time, and cheaper trains. Some of the trains do not have normal seating; many have carpeted areas separated by a partition.<\/p>\n<p>Within your open, partitioned \u201croom,\u201d called <em>nobi nobi <\/em>seats, <strong>you will find usually a window, a small table built into the wall, and some bedding and blankets<\/strong> to recline on. Other trains offer shared or private compartments with western style beds, and the luxury trains have the option of reserving a suite.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"The_Sunrise_Expressroutes\"><strong>The Sunrise Express\u00a0routes<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The Sunrise is unique in its operation. <strong>Between Tokyo, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/himeji-castle-travel-guide\">Himeji<\/a>, and Okayama, the Seto and Izumo trains are coupled together.<\/strong> At Okayama, they are detached.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Seto then runs southbound to Takamatsu <\/strong>(Kagawa, north of Shikoku island)<strong>,<\/strong><strong>\u00a0and the Izumo goes north to Matsue and Izumo, <\/strong>in the Shimane Prefecture.\u00a0On the return trip to Tokyo, the trains also stop at Osaka.<strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Prices_of_the_Sunrise_Express\">Prices of the Sunrise Express<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\">Japan Rail Pass<\/a>\u00a0will cover the base fare on overnight trains, <\/strong>including the Sunrise Express. You may be asked to pay an additional lodging fee or limited express fee.<\/p>\n<p>On the Sunrise Express, supplemental fees range from \u00a59,500 to \u00a517,000, depending on the accommodations selected.<\/p>\n<p>The JR Pass essentially <strong>provides a discount of \u00a510,000 to \u00a520,000<\/strong> off the entire price. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, you save the price of the ticket and only have to pay the supplement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>When you use simple seating, additional fees often do not apply<strong>.<\/strong> For example, the <em>nobi nobi <\/em>seating on the Sunrise does not incur an additional charge; the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\">JR Pass<\/a> covers such accommodations entirely.<strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n            <a class=\"fasc-button banner-button-shortcode fasc-size-large fasc-type-flat fasc-rounded-medium ico-fa fasc-ico-after fa-chevron-circle-right fasc-style-bold\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/the-japan-rail-pass\">\n                Buy your JR Pass\n            <\/a>\n        <\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"How_to_make_a_reservation\">How to make a reservation<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Ticket sales for overnight trains generally begin one month before the departure date.<\/strong> Tickets sell out very fast, so if you wish to enjoy this experience during your Japanese vacation, you must begin planning early. As there is currently no way to reserve overnight train tickets online, <strong>seat reservation must be made on the telephone or at the ticket office<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This can prove tricky for international travelers. As phone lines are often busy, having a friend residing in Japan to book the tickets for you is a good option. If you will be staying in Japan for more than thirty days, <strong>you can book the tickets yourself upon arrival in the country<\/strong>. First, you will purchase your Japan Rail Pass, then make reservations for the time that your pass will be active.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Accommodation_types\">Accommodation types<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>If you\u2019re seeking privacy and a good night\u2019s sleep, the Sunrise has you covered<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cType A\u201d cabins host a single bed, and \u201cType B\u201d cabins house twin beds. This train also features <em>nobi nobi<\/em> seats (basic-fare reclining seats), showers, toilet facilities, power outlets, and vending machines.<\/p>\n<p>Small lounges are also available. <strong>Keep in mind that no luggage compartments are available<\/strong>, so you will need to keep your belongings with you in your accommodations.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CLS3bt72xUA\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Moonlight_Nagara\">Moonlight Nagara<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Also included in the JR Pass<\/strong> is the Moonlight Nagara, <strong>a rapid overnight service train<\/strong>\u00a0that operates<strong> between Tokyo and Ogaki<\/strong>. This train runs seasonally during the busy periods of spring (two weeks from late March to early April), summer (late July to the end of August), and the Christmas and New Year holiday season.<\/p>\n<p>This train, which started operating seasonally in 2009, is nowadays an overnight rapid transfer between Tokyo, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/nagoya-travel-guide\">Nagoya<\/a>, and Ogaki. As it is connected to other local trains, it also facilitates the connections between Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka.<\/p>\n<p>It has 11 stops in total: Tokyo, Shinagawa, Yokohama, Odawara, Numazu, Shizuoka, Hamamatsu, Toyohashi, Nagoya, Gifu, and Ogak. However, only the train to Ogaki stops at Odawara station, and only the train to Tokyo stops at Toyohashi station.<\/p>\n<p>Despite being included in the JR Pass<strong>, you cannot reserve a seat online<\/strong> and the tickets are on sale one month prior to departure date.\u00a0You need to get a reserved seat before you ride but it is actually very hard to reserve a seat as all cars are reserved seat only, this means that there are no green cars or even non-reserved cars either.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Seven_Stars_Kyushu\"><strong>Seven Stars Kyushu<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/seven-stars-kyushu-luxury-train\">Seven Stars Kyushu<\/a> is another option. This train operates on the island of Kyushu<\/strong>, winding slowly through picturesque scenery to be enjoyed through large picture windows. The Seven Stars offers two and four-day itineraries, in which the train stops for a number of excursions.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Train_Suite_Shiki-Shima\">Train Suite Shiki-Shima<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>JR East has begun operating a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/luxury-trains-japan\/\"><strong>\u00a0luxury train, the Shiki-Shima<\/strong><\/a> train, with several routes varying from 2 to 4 days., depending on the season. Itineraries will go from Ueno Station in <strong>Tokyo to Nikko, Hakodate<\/strong><strong>\u00a0and Aomori<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Twilight_Express_Mikukaze\">Twilight Express Mikukaze<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>JR West also operates a &#8220;superluxury sleeper train&#8221;, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/luxury-trains-japan\/#Twilight_Express_Mizukaze\"><strong>Twilight Express Mikukaze<\/strong><\/a>, with tickets ranging from \u00a5270,000 to \u00a51.25 million.
