It used to be the <strong>capital of Japan<\/strong> and is one of the best places to get a feel for Japanese traditions from the iconic <strong>Edo Period<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>distance from Narita Airport to Kyoto<\/strong> <strong>is around 520 kilometers (323 miles)<\/strong>. Although there are closer airports to Kyoto (such as Kansai International Airport) often it\u2019s cheaper to take a flight to Narita as it\u2019s the country\u2019s<strong> busiest airport<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Narita Airport is <strong>67 kilometers east of Tokyo<\/strong> so to get from Narita Airport to Kyoto it\u2019s normally best to go via the capital first. With a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/\">JR Pass<\/a> you can catch a Shinkansen bullet train from<strong> Tokyo to Kyoto <\/strong>and cover the distance in just over a couple of hours.<\/p>\n<p>Alternatively you can catch a bus, fly by plane or drive. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/narita-express\"><strong>Narita Express<\/strong><\/a> is the fastest way of getting into the capital, it only takes approximately an hour and it\u2019s covered by your JR Pass (3,020 yen if you don\u2019t have one).<\/p>\n<p>The Narita Express either takes you to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/tokyo-train-station\">Tokyo Station<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/shinagawa-station\">Shinagawa Station<\/a> <\/strong>depending on the time of your departure. The Nozomi is marginally quicker than the Hikari.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/kodama-shinkansen\">Kodama<\/a> is the slowest as it takes<strong> around 4 hours <\/strong>and stops at every station. You can catch a shuttle bus from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/narita-airport-to-tokyo\">Narita Airport to Tokyo<\/a> and it costs just<strong> 1,000 yen<\/strong> and takes around<strong> 1 hour 20 minutes<\/strong>. However, the journey can take longer depending on the traffic. You can then catch a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/tokyo-to-kyoto-and-osaka\">Shinkansen to Kyoto<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There is also a long-distance bus, called the <strong>Nankai Express<\/strong>, that runs between <strong>Narita Airport and Kyoto overnight<\/strong>. It departs from Terminal 2 at 21:35 and from Terminal 1 at 21:40. The bus arrives at Kyoto Station at 6:25 in the morning. The bus costs <strong>8,740 yen one-way<\/strong> as is run by the Nankai Bus Company.<\/p>\n<p>It is a fantastic option if you\u2019re not a light sleeper and it\u2019s also <strong>fairly economical<\/strong>. There are two airports there, Osaka Itami International Airport and Kansai International Airport. Itamis is closer to Kyoto but Kansai is busier and tends to offer cheaper options.<\/p>\n<p>Every day there are 4 flights between Narita Airport and Osaka Itami Airport and the flight takes around <strong>1 hour 20 minutes<\/strong>. If you\u2019re flying from overseas you can often find <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrailpass.com\/blog\/japan-flight-discounts\">discounts for domestic flights<\/a>.
