In 1964 Tokyo became the first ever Asian host-city of the Olympic games. Next year, with the Opening Ceremony on July 24, it will become the first Asian city to have held the biggest sporting competition on the planet twice.
Many of the iconic 1964 stadiums will be reopened for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games and there will also be new, state-of-the-art venues which will have been purpose built.
At each Olympics, there are always a couple of new sports to feature. For the first time, climbing, karate, skateboarding, and surfing will be contested. Baseball and softball will make a comeback after being dropped from the London 2012 Olympics.
There will be two main zones which will be linked physically and metaphorically. The Heritage Zone (the area of the ‘64 Olympics) will overlap with the new Tokyo Bay Zone, representing the link between past Olympic legacy and that of the present and future.
Olympic locations for Tokyo 2020
The two interlinking zones will form the shape of the infinity symbol, the concept of the venue plan has been dubbed ‘Infinite Excitement’. The Olympic Village, the spiritual heart of the games, will be located where the two zones meet.
The infinity symbol represents the commitment, passion, and inspiration of the world’s greatest athletes, and the limitless potential of the generations to come. The Tokyo Bay Zone will represent the future, standing as a model for cutting-edge, urban development.
The Heritage Zone will be located in the central business area of Tokyo, northwest of the Olympic Village. It will include 7 venues, most of which were also used in the ‘64 games.
The biggest area, the Tokyo Bay Zone, will be southeast of the Olympic Village and will contain 13 venues. The majority will be in the Ariake District though some will be in Odaiba and the surrounding artificial islands. There will also be some outlying venues for some events with specific requirements.

List of Venues
A total of 42 venues will be used for the games. They will hold 339 events in 33 different sports, covering 50 disciplines.
The New National Stadium, also known as Olympic Stadium, will serve as the main venue of the Olympics and Paralympics. The Stadium was used in the 1964 Olympics and is being rebuilt in the same spot in the Heritage Zone.
It will hold 68,000 seats but the capacity could be increased to 80,000 for the soccer matches. The opening and closing ceremonies and all the track and field events will take place there.
